Book Blogger Hop | June 8th-14th

Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop is a weekly meme hosted by Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer, where you answer a bookish question and join a “hop”. The purpose is to help bloggers discover and get to know one another. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday.

This week’s question: What author have you read the most in the past two years? (submitted by Elizabeth @ Silver’s Reviews)

This is a pretty easy question for me because I’ve noticed I’ve been reading a lot of new authors but also staying around authors I love.

*Clicking the author’s name will take you to their Goodreads page*

From 2016-Present:

  1. Victoria Aveyard (6)
  2. R.S. Grey (3)
  3. Julie Kagawa (4)
  4. Sarah J Maas (5)
  5. Mary E. Pearson (3)
  6. J.R. Ward (4)
  7. Erin Watt (4)

I’m in the process of reading everything by R.S. Grey. I adore her writing so much!! I was reading the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward but have since lost interest.

Who are some of your most read authors lately?! Let me know in the comments below!

The Art of French Kissing by Brianna R. Shrum Review

The Art of French Kissing

The Art of French Kissing by Brianna R. Shrum

2 Stars

This review is for an ARC and is my unbiased, honest opinion.

This story almost felt like two different stories in one. The first half we have students competing in a cooking competition. Two of the students, Carter and Reid, clash immediately upon meeting each other. This sets off a chain reaction of sabotage and psychological warfare. I absolutely enjoyed the cooking aspects to this book. I love me some Food network and this was identical to their challenges. It was fun to see how they would react to each of the challenges and the drama that went along with the students.

As I was saying, we had parts of Carter and Reid loathing each other to the maximum. It had bits of flirty undertones to it but nothing major. About halfway through, things shift. Suddenly Carter and Reid have feelings for each other and don’t know how to deal with it. I will say, I didn’t like the zero to sixty with their relationship. I didn’t feel we had enough time to go along with their relationship turning more romantically. It starts to feel super awkward and super rushed. It just didn’t flow very well in my opinion.

I think one of my issues with this book was my dislike for Carter. She felt very selfish but at the same time self conscious? It was a weird combination for sure. I kept getting whiplash with her reactions to things. It was like she would be mad that someone wasn’t taking her opinion into consideration, but then when they said go with whatever you like…she was pissed they weren’t helping? I didn’t get it….

Reid on the other hand was a sweetheart. I really enjoyed his character. He would surprise Carter by cooking her special things so she could experience them for the first time. It melted my heart. I also love how supportive he was. I think Carter could take a few lessons from him on that.

Overall, this story had so much potential. I did like it but certain things just overshadowed it. I would still like to try other books by this author and see how they go.

So this month went by WAY too fast. I did struggle with picking up books this month. I blame last month reading 11 books on that. I’m still happy with the amount I read this go around. There’s always room for improvement. This month we also wrapped up one of my favorite series in book club. It was bittersweet 😦 Can’t wait to see what series we tackle next!! Throne of Glass series anyone?!?!

Marvel A-Thon Announcement

I recently became a fan of the Marvel Universe. I’m late to the party…I know, but better late than never right?!?! When I saw this announcement on my friend Sahitya’s Blog, I literally squealed!!! My two favorites things (Marvel and books) wrapped into one?!? YES PLEASE!!! Marvel-A-Thon is being hosted by Jamieson @Jamishelves. The readathon takes place June 1st-July 1st. For more information be sure to check out Jamieson’s blog in the link above ❤

This readathon is focused around Marvel movies in the cinematic universe, each of the movies have been split into their phases and there is one challenge per movie. The goal is to read a book for EVERY SINGLE MOVIE (that’s 21 movies, by the way). Everyone starts in Phase One, and you can’t move onto the next phase until you’ve completed all the challenges. Here is the game board below:

  • Readathon takes place June 1st-July 1st.
  • The aim of this challenge is to read as many books as you can, and to finish the challenge you reach the final movie in the MCU phase three (Avengers 4)
  • You can read books in any order WITHIN phases, but need to complete the phase to move onto the next one.
  • We’ve all skipped watching a Marvel movie here and there, which means you’re allowed two skips per phase, and skips can be rolled over into the next phase if they’re not used. So in total you have 6 skips to play with.
  • You can’t use one book for multiple challenges one book per category must be read.
  • Books can be ANYTHING and any length. Audiobooks, ebooks, graphic novels, comics, fanfics and anything else you can think of.

**Feel free to interpret these as loosely as you like. While some are pretty self explanatory (read the first book in a series) some are more vague (read a book involving medicine) so feel free to interpret how you would like. Because there is so many challenges I’d rather people didn’t worry too much about the exact semantics, just fit to the challenge as much as you can. For example, a challenging book can be because of it’s genre, it’s format or it’s content. Whatever makes it challenging to YOU. A book “involving” something can mean it relates to the main character, the plot, the cover, anything else. Feel free to interpret.

***For the Infinity War challenge, you need to read one book that works for two or more categories and those can be ANY categories, it doesn’t matter what phase. For example, you could read a book with a green cover that’s popular to complete it. Or a book set in the 80’s with multiple perspectives. As long as it’s fulfilling two or more challenges at once it qualifies for the Infinity War space.

**Any other questions can be directed to Jami on Twitter @jamishelves or her blog.

*Clicking each book cover will take you to its Goodreads page*

Phase One

Iron Man: Read the first book in a series.

Jock Row (Jock Hard, #1)

I had SO many choices for this topic but decided to go with Jock Row. I’ve been wanting to read this ever since I heard the synopsis. Please let this be amazing!!!

Hulk: Read a book with a green cover.

The Fortunate Ones

I have so much love for this author!!! I cannot wait to read more by her and see if they’re all 5 stars.

Iron Man 2: Read a book that’s unpopular.

Elite (Eagle Elite, #1)

Okay, hear me out. The first several reviews for this on Goodreads are 1 stars. I also have a friend who read it and gave it 2 stars. To me, that’s unpopular.

Thor: Read a book that involves myth or mythology.

The Star-Touched Queen (The Star-Touched Queen, #1)

I’ve had this on my TBR and bookshelf for soooo long now. It’s time to pick it up and see what I think.

Captain America: Read a book set or written in World War Two.

I’ll be using one of my skips for this topic. Which makes me sad because I love Captain America ❤

The Avengers: Read a book with multiple perspectives.

A Court of Frost and Starlight (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3.1)

I’ve tried to find time to squeeze this book in ever since it was released. I’ve had way too many ARCS so far and haven’t been able to…..until now!!! It will get read asap!

Phase Two

Iron Man 3: Read a book that will challenge you.

Ace of Hearts (The Cursed Ravens MC, #1)

As far as this topic goes….I recently tried this author on another book (Leading the Witness, see my review here) and I didn’t enjoy it. I’m really nervous to try something else by this author but I’m going to give her another chance.

Dark World: Read a book that involves siblings.

Three Dark Crowns (Three Dark Crowns, #1)

I recently won a digital copy of this from Goodreads so it’s time to bump it up on my TBR. Hope I like it as much as everyone else.

Winter Soldier: Read a book where the main character is a villain or anti-hero.

Blood Match (Blood Type, #2)

I have an ARC to read for this book. This book focuses majorly on a villain and his evil ways so I’m saying it’s good enough for this topic.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Read a book set in, written in, or involving the 80’s.

This isn’t a topic I’m interesting in reading about right now.

Age of Ultron: Read a book involving an AI in some way.

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1)

The synopsis says it has AI in it….so let’s hope it does for this challenge’s sake lol. BTW, I’m SUPER nervous to read this one…..

Ant-Man: Read a book involving a heist or thieves.

Crooked Kingdom (Six of Crows, #2)

When you see the word heist….you should automatically think of Kaz and his crew. I’ve put off this sequel long enough.

Phase Three

Civil War: Read a book about a rivalry or enemies.

Frostbite (Vampire Academy, #2)

This series focuses a lot on rivalries and enemies. Seems perfect for this topic.

Doctor Strange: Read a book that involves medicine in some way.

I can’t think of any books involving medicine. Using a skip for this topic.

GOTG Volume 2: Read a book set in or involving space.

I already used Illuminae for a previous topic and you can’t double up so guess I’m skipping this one.

Spider-Man: Read a YA book involving secrets in some way.

This book involves a secret text chain where these guys share compromising photos of girls. I think a portion of the book is trying to figure out those involved and trying to stop them.

Thor: Ragnarok: Read a popular book.

The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air, #1)

I cannot wait to read this one!!! I’m excited to see how a different author (other than Sarah J Maas) handles faeries!!!

Infinity War: Read a book that fulfills multiple challenges.

Settling the Score (The Summer Games, #1)

This book covers several topics. It has green on the cover, multiple pov’s, female mc, going in blind, etc. I just had to add another R.S. Grey book to my pile!!

Black Panther: Read an ownvoices book with a black main character.

Black Panther #1

I enjoyed the movie so much that now I want to read the comic book series. I hope it’s just as good as the movie.

Captain Marvel: Read a book with a female MC.

The Assassin's Blade (Throne of Glass, #0.1-0.5)

I’m hosting a readalong for this series and we are starting out with the novellas to set the tone for the series. Check out my book club here.

The Avengers 4: Read a book you don’t know anything about.

Playing Hurt (Aces Hockey, #6)

So…yes, I did request this ARC…..No, I do not remember what it is about lol. I got pretty click happy requesting things awhile back. Don’t worry, I’m paying the price for it now.

And there is my TBR for this challenge. I will give a disclaimer and say I will be going off the path for this one. I’ll bounce around from phase to phase and will also stretch this out longer than a month. There’s no way I can read 21 books in a month. BUT having said that, I loved this readathon and want to finish it out. I’m also pretty happy that I only used 4 out of 6 skips. Woohoo!

If you are joining, leave your links below for me to check out!!! I’m beyond excited to start this challenge!!! EEK!!! Good luck everyone ❤

War Storm by Victoria Aveyard Review

War Storm by Victoria Aveyard

War Storm by Victoria Aveyard

4 Stars

I just finished reading this and have no idea how I feel lol. I think I envisioned the series ending a certain way and it didn’t…so I’m completely thrown off. I felt the ending was also too open-ended for my tastes. I won’t go into more details because spoilers but yeah. It almost feels like we need a novella to tie everything up. I prefer clean cut endings. I don’t like it when they end and I have to imagine different scenarios…..It’s just not my cup of tea. I’ve heard we are getting some novellas set in this world so I hope the author gives me a true wrap up to one of my all time favorite series.

One of the things I enjoyed most in this book was the longing between two characters. Actually, there was quite a bit of longing between several characters BUT I’m specifically referring to a certain couple. ((Don’t you just love it when you are trying to write up a review and keep it spoiler free? lol!!)) The moments between this specific couple were just the best. I craved more and more from these two throughout the entire book.

I truly loved how the Scarlet Guard kept fighting for what was right. It wasn’t easy and it went against everything that everyone knew up until that point. But still, they kept pushing and fighting for justice. I admired their perseverance.

The characters throughout this series are such memorable ones. I can’t help but picture where they are now and how their lives have changed. That’s another reason I’m hoping for more post War Storm novellas. Tell me all my faves are living their best lives ever!!

Overall, this book was a mammoth. I think it could’ve been shorter realistically. I also didn’t care for the pacing in the first half. I needed more push to the plot, more drive to get me invested in this finale. The second half was very dramatic/action packed as expected. However, I wish it would’ve slowed down just a bit to let the moments we’ve been building up to for several books last longer. I’m a huge fan of this series and still highly recommend it to everyone. It will always hold a special place in my heart. I cannot wait to read what this author comes up with next.
