First Lines Friday

First Lines Friday is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words.

What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

I was locked in the library trying not to panic. Literally locked. As in, no escape. Every door, every window, every air vent. Okay, I hadn’t tried the air vents, but I was seriously considering it. I wasn’t desperate enough…..yet.

Ready for the Reveal!?!?!

In the beginning, there’s a boy standing in the trees. He’s around my age, in that space between child and man, maybe all of seventeen years old. I’m not sure how I know this. I can only see the back of his head, his dark hair curling damply against his neck. I feel the dry heat of the sun, so intense, drawing the life from everything. There’s a strange orange light filling the eastern sky. There’s the heavy smell of smoke. For a moment I’m filled with such a smothering grief that it’s hard to breathe. I don’t know why. I take a step toward the boy, open my mouth to call his name, only I don’t know it. The ground crunches under my feet. He hears me. He starts to turn. One more second and I will see his face.

That’s when the vision leaves me. I blink, and it’s gone.

I wonder what kind of sound it would make if I were to smash this glass against the side of his head.

It’s a thick glass. His head is hard. The potential for a nice big THUD is there.

I wonder if he would bleed. There are napkins on the table, but not the good kind that could soak up a lot of blood.

November 9

November 9 by Colleen Hoover

Sounds pretty good right?! Well I do want to warn you, this isn’t a thriller. It’s very much a romance but with some twists and turns to it. This is my 4th book by Colleen Hoover and I gave it 5 stars. November 9 had some bookish references sprinkled throughout that just made it that much more adorable in my eyes. Another bonus was experiencing several emotions while reading one story. Trust me, you’ll be all over the place.

Run.

My breath is sharp as a dagger, stabbing through my throat. It’s all I hear. Whoosh. Whoosh. In and out.

They’re here. The Trackers. They’ve followed Bian from the lowland village where he lives. The fool led them right to us.

Today was the day a thousand dreams would die and a single dream would be born.

The wind knew. It was the first of June, but cold gusts bit at the hilltop citadelle as fiercely as deepest winter, shaking the windows with curses and winding through drafty halls with warning whispers. There was no escaping what was to come.

The Kiss of Deception (The Remnant Chronicles, #1)

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson  is a series I’ve been looking forward to reading for a really long time now. The whole thing with book one is figuring out who is friend and who is foe. Sadly, I was spoiled to which is which person. It totally ruined my excitement for reading KoD. I’ve tried to forget the spoiler but it’s sticking to me like glue. I’m told it’s still a great series regardless of knowing what I know BUT I still wish I was able to experience it like everyone else did.

Have you read this one?! Did you finish the series?! What’d you think!? Let me know your spoiler free comments below!!

I felt her fear before I heard her screams.

Her nightmare pulsed into me, shaking me out of my own dream, which had had something to do with a beach and some hot guy rubbing suntan oil on me.

Images–hers, not mine– tumbled through my mind: fire and blood, the smell of smoke, the twisted metal of a car.

Dun dun dun!!!! Ready for the Reveal!?!?!
