First Lines Friday | 4

First Lines Friday

First Lines Friday is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words.

What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

I wonder what kind of sound it would make if I were to smash this glass against the side of his head.

It’s a thick glass. His head is hard. The potential for a nice big THUD is there.

I wonder if he would bleed. There are napkins on the table, but not the good kind that could soak up a lot of blood.

Ready for the Reveal!?!?!

Arrow

November 9

November 9 by Colleen Hoover

Sounds pretty good right?! Well I do want to warn you, this isn’t a thriller. It’s very much a romance but with some twists and turns to it. This is my 4th book by Colleen Hoover and I gave it 5 stars. November 9 had some bookish references sprinkled throughout that just made it that much more adorable in my eyes. Another bonus was experiencing several emotions while reading one story. Trust me, you’ll be all over the place.

What are your thoughts on the teaser and the cover? Have you read this one?!  Let me know your spoiler free comments below!!

Let’s Bake: Bread

Let's bake

Today I’m attempting for the first time ever to make bread. EEK!!!!! I wanted to embrace my inner pioneer woman and see how it goes!!! I’m the type of person who wants to make my own bread, butter, etc. I told you guys I was meant for the Old West lol!! I think I’d fit in just perfectly.

BUT ANYWAY, I followed this recipe by Taste of Home. This being the first time I’ve made it, I didn’t change or alter any of the ingredients or instructions.

Ingredients:

  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast

It comes in a package of 3 but you will only need 1 of the packets. Link here.

  • 2-1/4 cups warm water (110° to 115°)

I just used warm water from the faucet TBH.

  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 6-1/4 to 6-3/4 cups all-purpose flour

Directions:

  • In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add the sugar, salt, oil and 3 cups flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, to form a soft dough.

I used my Kitchen Aid mixer but you can do it by hand also. Just add a 1/2 cup each time to see how much you’ll need. You don’t want the dough to be runny. You want it to look “solid” and not stick to your spoon.

*So I’m watching videos on Youtube about baking bread. It seems the best thing is to let your yeast and warm water set for 5-10 minutes on it’s own (without stirring) before adding other ingredients to “proof”. I may try that next time because it’s been on every video I’ve watched so far.

*no picture, I was stressing at this point lol*

  • Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, 8-10 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1-1/2 hours.

I think “floured surface” can’t be stressed enough. YOU WILL NEED LOTS OF FLOOR. It will be such a mess too. Don’t worry, you aren’t messing it up. I tried to put it on wax paper and do it that way but it just wasn’t working out. The paper kept lifting up, it would make holes, etc. I ended up putting floor into a large bowl and mixing it with floured hands that way. It worked 500 times better than the wax paper. Just make sure it’s mixed well. I think I’ll try using the dining table next time and just flouring the area really well. I also added in sprinkles of flour as I mixed it together. You want to lose most of the stickiness and it be a smooth ball of dough.

For the warm place, I put it in a greased bowl (place small amount of oil and rub it around the bowl with clean hands) as it says, covered with a kitchen towel and placed in front of our wall heater. I left it there for an hour.

1
Letting the dough rise while covered in a warm place
  • Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; divide dough in half. Shape each into a loaf. Place in two greased 9×5-in. loaf pans. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30-45 minutes.

Pretty self explanatory on this step. I divided it as equally as I could and placed into the greased loaf pans (you can use oil or butter). Then placed it back in the warm area with the kitchen towel over it. I left it there for 40 minutes.

*In the Youtube videos, I’m seeing some roll out the divided dough to get out air bubbles. Then they roll it into a log shape and then place into the greased pans. I just tried to shape mine and then placed into the pan. Another tip learned for next time!

21.jpg
The dough after rising
3
Dividing the dough into 2 equal parts then placing into the loaf pans
  • Bake at 375° for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and bread sounds hollow when tapped. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool. Yield: 2 loaves (16 slices each).

I removed the kitchen towel and placed both bread pans into the oven at 375° for 27-30 minutes. It really just depends on your oven how long to leave it.

*Youtube showed to place the bread into the oven, then preheat it. It says while heating, the bread will rise some more. I didn’t do that this time but making several notes since I’m a newbie!

4.jpg
Fresh out of the oven
  • After the bread came out, I melted some butter and brushed onto the loaves.
  • Wah lah! We’re finished!
5.jpg
After I brushed the butter on them. Such a gorgeous color!

I think I did pretty well for my first try. It had a great taste and my family really enjoyed it. As I noted previously, I watched some Youtube videos and learned some tricks that I’ll use next time. Lucky for you, you can learn the tricks ahead of time by reading this and not learning by trial and error like I’m having to haha!!

I also recommend watching some videos on kneading your bread as there seems to be a technique to it. Overall, to me baking bread is a learning process. I think you’ll just have to make it a couple of times to get things just the way you want them or to get your technique/recipe just right. If it tastes good then that’s all that matters in my opinion!! If you attempt to make this, please share photos and let me know your thoughts below!

The Grinch Book Tag

Book Tag

I was tagged by my bestie Dani over at The Introverted Book Nerd. Be sure to go check out her post and blog. She works so hard and it definitely shows!!! I’m so glad we’ve gotten to know each other better this year!!

This tag was originally created by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes.

Also just a disclaimer: this is all about being the Grinch and letting some “not so positive” feelings out. I don’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings by any means. We all love different things and that’s okay ❤ I’m sure I love something that you hate and vice versa. It’s all good and just harmless fun!!!

  • Half of the lights on the Christmas tree are burnt out: Name a book/series/character that started out good but then went downhill.

Dorothy must die series by Danielle Paige. I really enjoyed book one but then it started to become “let’s see how many books we can really stretch this out to”.

  • Annoying Great Aunt Sally who will not leave you alone: Name a book that you didn’t enjoy, but everyone else seems to love so it never goes away.

Will people attack me if I say Harry Potter?!?! EEK!! I’m so so sorry guys!! I just don’t get the hype. Maybe I read it too late in life? (I only read book one here recently in 2016)

  • Your pets keep knocking over the Christmas decoration: Name a character that kept messing things up for everyone else. (Can’t pick a villain.)

Let’s go with Aurora from Roar by Cora Carmack. I feel like she didn’t know who she was or who she wanted to be so she was constantly trying to prove herself and it continuously made a mess.

  • You hear your parents putting out the presents and learn Santa isn’t real: Name a book you were spoiled for.

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson. The whole twist in the first book is you have two guys and you don’t know who is the good guy and whose the bad one. WELL GUESS WHAT!! Someone told me which was which. I couldn’t believe it. I’m still not over it.

  • It’s freezing outside: Name a main character you just couldn’t connect with.

Hartley from Fallen Heir by Erin Watt. I didn’t vibe with Hartley AT ALL. I tried to connect with her but it just never happened.

  • Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ and it’s giving you anti-romantic feelings: Name a couple you couldn’t stand.

You ready for this?!?! Warner and Juliette from the Shatter Me series. JUST NO!

  • That scratchy homemade wool sweater you got for Christmas years ago but won’t get rid of: Show some books that have been sitting on your shelves for awhile and you aren’t motivated to read, but you don’t have the heart to get rid of.

Sword and Verse by Kathy MacMillan

I bought this the day it came out……Jan. 19, 2016…..Have I read it yet?! NOPE

The Rise (Originals) by Julie Plec

I bought this series because I love the Originals TV series but I just can’t bring myself to read it for some reason. I keep telling myself “one day”.

  • Grandma got run over by a reindeer: Name a character death you still are mad about. (Warn people for spoilers! You can also use tv or movie deaths.)

*Spoilers below for The Walking Dead*

Glenn from TWD. I just can’t…..he was part of this show’s foundation and I’m afraid that without him……..it won’t last long.

*Removed Red Queen spoiler because I’m scared someone will see on accident.

  • The malls are overly crowded with holiday shoppers: Name a series that has too many books in it/went on too long.

The Selection Series by Kiera Cass. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the first three books…but the others…….

  • The Grinch: Name one character you HATE. (No villains)

Nesta from the ACOTAR series. CANNOT stand her. And no it’s not because she’s my man’s love interest. I honestly just dislike her character. I can’t get over the things she did and continues to do.

Nominations:

Allysa @ Hungry for Books

I also tag anyone else who would like to do this one!

Hopefully most of you aren’t too mad at me right now lol. I can’t help how I feel :(( Let me know if you do this tag, would love to see everyone’s Grinchy answers!!

War Storm (Red Queen, #4)

This being my favorite series, I cannot wait for its release!!! I love the crown theme on all the covers. So pretty!!! I can’t believe this is truly the last book. How will I survive without my Red Queen crew?

Royals

I’ve really been into royalty romance books here lately. When I heard that Rachel Hawkins was releasing one too, it made my day!! I can’t wait to see Rachel put her spin on the royalty world!

The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air, #1)

I’m all about faeries. It may top vampires for my favorite supernatural being. The synopsis for this one just blows me away!! I don’t even want to wait until January to read it lol!!

Flame in the mist was a slow start but the ending really got to me. I find myself thinking about the story and characters more than I imagined I would.

The World of Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

This one is supposed to have artwork, maps, etc. I love that we are taken to the next level within this world. Getting a deeper look at things sounds like the perfect gift!!

Kiss Collector

Kiss Collector by Wendy Higgins

I recently discovered Wendy Higgins when I picked up The Great Hunt. I’m currently reading the sequel, The Great Pursuit, and really enjoying it. I’m excited to see what Wendy does with a romance based story.

*No Cover Yet*

Throne of Glass #7 by Sarah J Maas

Finally we have Throne of Glass #7. The finale to this roller coaster of a series. I plan on re-reading the other books before this one releases. I’m excited to re-experience the world and catch things that I may have missed the first time reading.

These are my 11 (yes, I cheated) most anticipated books for 2018!!! I cannot wait to get my hands on these!!! What are you most anticipated books for the coming year?! Let me know in the comments below or link me to your post!!!

Bookish Naughty or Nice Tag

Book Tag

The Creator of this tag is Jenn, check out her post and blog here. I was tagged by the creator Jenn and fellow blogger Amber. Thank you ladies for the tag!! This looks like so much fun!!!

Rules:

  • Credit the person who tagged you and link their post
  • Tag the original creator and their post
  • Tick the ones you’ve done
  • Cross the ones you haven’t
  • Tag more bloggers

Questions:

1.) Received an ARC and not reviewed it   ❌
Not on this blog I haven’t. I’m doing pretty good about not requesting more than I can handle.

2.) Have less than 60% feedback rating on Netgalley    ❌
No, I’m currently at 100% woot woot!!! Like I said, I’m not requesting a lot these days lol.

3.) Rated a book on GoodReads and promised a full review was to come on your blog (and never did)  ❌
Nope!! I usually post to Goodreads and my blog at the same time. I schedule the blog post first, then when it’s live I post to GR and retail sites.

4.) Folded down the page of a book  ❌
I just can’t. My body would not let me do this lol!! When I get library books, I always fix all the dog ears and bent pages.

5.) Accidentally spilled on a book  ✔️
I’m pretty sure I’ve spilled bath water on a book before. OOPS! (not a ton, just a bit)

6.) DNF a book this year ✔️
I did!! I’m proud to say I did because usually I don’t and it ruins my reading vibes for a pretty significant amount of time.

7.) Bought a book purely because it was pretty with no intention of reading it ✔️❌
I’m not sure on this one. I mean, I’ve purchased books because they were pretty but I always intend on reading them. It may be years before I do but I always plan on reading them.

8.) Read whilst you were meant to be doing something else (like homework) ✔️
YES!! I always complain about not having time for this and that but somehow I end up finding time to read a book lol!

9.) Skim read a book ✔️
I have before I learned to just DNF. Why punish myself when I’m clearly not enjoying the book!?

10.) Completely missed your GoodReads goal  ✔️
That would be this year! My goal was 100 books and I had to read 9 million children’s books to reach 61. UGH! Never again will I set such a high goal. (remind me of this)

11.) Borrowed a book and not returned it ❌
Never!!! I’ve been on the receiving end of this and it’s AWFUL.

12.) Broke a book buying ban ✔️
YES! Mainly because of sales. So not fair!!! They should know I’m on a ban and not have all these amazing deals!

13.) Started a review, left it for ages then forgot what the book was about ❌
Nope! The second I finish a book, I write the review. I won’t answer texts, the phone, go around people, etc. I have to get this review done while everything is fresh in my mind.

14.) Wrote in a book you were reading ❌
I don’t see the need to write in a book?? I do keep a notebook close by while reading to make notes. Especially when it’s a larger book with a ton of characters.

15.) Finished a book and not added it to your GoodReads ❌
No, I like seeing how much I have read over the years. Gotta keep it updated!

6.5 checks, EEK! Does that mean I’m on the Naughty list?!?! NOOOO!! I’m saying I made the Nice list this year. I think 8 checks and up means you’re on the Naughty list haha!

This week’s theme is: Holiday TV/Movie Reviews

*Clicking the photos will take you to their page.*

This will be my last Holiday TV and Movie review for the year. Awww!! I’ve enjoyed watching all the holiday things this past month and will miss them once December ends. There’s just something so special about the Christmas season.

Olaf's Frozen Adventure Poster

This was a short film about 20 ish minutes long. The girls Elsa and Anna want to celebrate a holiday tradition but realize they don’t have any. Olaf goes off in search of finding the best holiday tradition to bring back to the girls. This was super cute!! It was a bit sad for awhile but it quickly picked back up. I can’t wait for Frozen 2 to premiere.

Image result for food network

Outrageous Christmas 2014

Strangely this series doesn’t have any artwork to go with it?? I decided to just use the network symbol instead. You guys….they made a life sized Christmas tree out of cake, a 1,000 lb. chocolate Santa sculpture with elves, a 7 foot tall candy cane, a gingerbread village featuring 1,020 gingerbread houses and so much more. I’m just in awe after watching this. How amazing would that be to create these items?!! Sign me up!!!

For some reason, this recording had episodes 1 and the finale, episode 6, only. Not sure why they chose to only have those grouped together but alrighty then lol. These houses were insane! I cannot imagine the time and effort it took to do all of this. I wonder how they have enough power to run all these displays, hmm. Their electric bill must be insane during the holidays lol!! (As you can see my practical side came out when watching this.)

I watched episodes 1-7 with the exception of episode 2. Not sure why that one didn’t record lol. It’s amazing how these bakers have all these recipes in their mind. ((I never saw them look at a recipe but it’s possible they did)) I hope to become that great of a baker one day. This was a fun series to watch. I loved seeing their imaginations run wild as their given a random ingredient and expected to make something delicious in 30 minutes (or whatever the time limit was). I already miss watching this series! Hopefully it comes back in 2018.

There you have it!!! Most of the holiday themed things I watched this season. I watched some others but didn’t want a super long post so I didn’t write about all of them. Did you watch anything festive this season!? Which one was your favorite?!! Let me know in the comments below! Merry Christmas Everyone!!!! ❤

20 Questions Christmas Tag

Book Tag

I was tagged by Ash over at For the love of books. Thanks so much for tagging me Ash! You know how I love Christmas related things haha!!

  • Questions:

Use one noise to describe how excited you are for Christmas.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! lol!

Do you open any presents on Christmas Eve?

We used to go to my grandmothers on Christmas Eve and open presents from her. Then open from the immediate family on Christmas morning.

What holiday traditions are you looking forward to most this year?

Looking at Christmas lights and playing games after Christmas dinner.

Is your Christmas tree real or fake?

Fake. I’ve never had a real Christmas tree.

What is your favorite Christmas film?

Elf!!! So hilarious!

Where do you usually spend your holiday?

Locally with family.

What is your favorite Christmas song?

Mary, did you know OR Carrie Underwood – “O Holy Night”

What is your all-time favorite holiday food/sweet treat?

Peppermint chocolate covered pretzels and Grinch juice!! (green lime sherbet with pineapple juice and ginger ale)

Be honest: do you like giving gifts or receiving gifts better?

I’m usually the one giving gifts randomly throughout the year, so it’s nice to receive gifts around Christmas.

What is your favorite thing about Christmas?

Just the Christmas spirit and celebrating the birth of Jesus.

When do you start getting excited for Christmas?

November. I’m not big into Thanksgiving so by November I’m counting down until December 1st (aka when Christmas celebrations start).

What is the best Christmas gift you’ve ever received?

I’ve had so many special Christmas gifts that it’s hard to single out one special gift above the others. If there was thought put behind the gift, that means more to me than anything.

What is the worst present you’ve ever received?

I can’t think of an awful gift I’ve received. Plus that wouldn’t be very nice to say lol!

As a kid, did a sibling ever receive a present that you wished was for you?

Umm, not that I can remember but my brain isn’t functioning the best right now haha.

What would be your dream place to visit for the holiday season?

I think NYC. They do it up BIG for the holidays so I would love to experience that at least once in my life.

Most memorable Holiday moment?

Probably the first year with a baby (my first nephew). It was so sweet having a new addition to the family.

Do you make New Years resolutions? Do you stick to them?

I always make plans to lose weight and study the Bible more. I usually start out well but fail pretty quickly.

What makes the holidays special for you?

I feel repetitive, but it’s truly spending time with family.

What’s the best part about Christmas for you?

Getting together with family members. We’re always busy busy running around so it’s nice to get together and just enjoy time together.

You have been granted one Christmas wish…what will it be?

For my step-dad to be cured of cancer and for a healthy family.
