This review is for an ARC and is my unbiased, honest opinion.
So….this was nothing like I expected it to be. When I first looked into this book, the synopsis showed “skills to help you cope with the feelings of anxiety, depression, anger, and stress that may be getting in the way of living an independent, fulfilling adult life”. That was just what I needed!! However, I didn’t absorb the “delve into the deeply emotional aspects of growing up” part of the synopsis. I really wish I saw that and knew that it was going to be a “deeper” read.
You know when someone is explaining their favorite hobby to you and the details that are involved. Such as someone who likes rebuilding car motors. They can tell you every little detail and they get what they’re saying, however….to someone who doesn’t work on cars, it can be overwhelming. That was this book for me. I just couldn’t keep up. The author used several metaphors throughout the book and honestly, I got lost in the shuffle more often than not. I’m not sure if it was due to me not usually reading this type of book or if it was just not geared towards the average adult. I felt quite dumb trying to understand this book and catch what the author wanted me to.
Overall, this isn’t a book that’s surface level if you will. It goes deeper into why we act the way we do, the inside wiring of our personalities, etc. If that’s your thing, then definitely pick up this book. However, if you want a basic understanding and different tips and tricks to handle your anxiety and other issues, I don’t think this is what you are looking for. Who knows, this may not have been my cup of tea but you may really enjoy it.
