Top Ten Tuesday | Audiobooks FAQ

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme previously hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week there’s a new topic for a top ten list.

This week’s topic is: Audiobooks FAQ

My journey with audiobooks: I’m one of those people who just could not listen to audiobooks. I could sit there and listen to a story but my mind just wanders all over the place. I would remember I was listening to a book and then have to rewind. Try repeating that 700 million times. It just wasn’t working out. In January 2019, I decided that this was the year of audiobooks. I wanted to be able to listen to audiobooks when reading wasn’t an option. So I waited until bedtime and crawled into bed. I turned off the tv, electronics, the lights (except my lamp), etc. I also chose a novella because I think that’s best to start out with. Don’t start out with a 1,000 page story because you aren’t used to listening quite yet. Anywho, I chose my novella and just laid there listening to the story. This is what it took for it to “click” with me. I didn’t use a faster speed or anything like that either. I just took it nice and slow. Finally I was able to start listening while cleaning. Before I knew it, I had finished my first audiobook and actually understood what happened in it!!! I was so proud of myself!!!! I graduated from bedtime in the dark listening to listening during the day while doing certain tasks. Cleaning, doing laundry, cooking, etc. That’s where I’m at now. I’m not at the point of driving while listening and not sure if I’ll ever be. I don’t really like driving so I like to be totally focused and don’t want to zone out while listening to a book. That’s just me, I know others are more than capable of doing this without any dangers. I’m just not at that point yet. So basically, I’ve been where you are (if you’re struggling). I would start a book and my mind would just start thinking about EVERYTHING. I recommend trying what worked for me and seeing if you have any luck with it. Keep me posted on your progress!! I’d love to hear how it’s working for you!!

How I listen: I usually listen to audiobooks through my phone. I have several apps that I listen to (read me romance, overdrive, audible, etc). I haven’t yet attempted to listen to an audiobook while driving. I just don’t need that kind of pressure lol!!

Favorite audiobooks: Royally Endowed by Emma ChaseDefy by L.J. Shen, and If I only knew by Corinne Michaels.

Places I listen to audiobooks: Read me Romance app/podcast , Overdrive, my library has some audiobooks on cds, Audible, Scribd, and sometimes authors have audio tours for advance copies of books as well. Also, my library has the option to get books from other libraries called Interloan. Maybe you can request some audiobooks that way or even ask your library to purchase ones you are interested in?

Is listening to audiobooks reading? OF COURSE IT IS!!! If you wear glasses are you actually seeing?? YES!!! Just because you use a different method, that doesn’t mean you aren’t really seeing. It’s the same concept.

Favorite Narrator: Shane East hands down. I’m soo in love with his voice. It’s so sexy AND he has an accent. YES PLEASE!

Female narrator wise, I don’t have a stand out favorite. I haven’t listened to that many narrators yet but I’m sure I’ll eventually have a preference. I really liked Tracey Marks and Sophie Eastlak, so I’ll pick those two for now 🙂

How and when do you find you listen to audiobooks? I usually listen when I’m cleaning or doing other household tasks. Something that doesn’t require my full attention and that I can do on autopilot. I sometimes listen right before going to sleep with all the lights out while laying in bed.

I hope this post helps some of you. I’ve been there, trust me!!! I’d love to chat about audiobooks with you all. Leave me some comments below ❤

  1. I looove listening to audiobooks while I drive, I travel a lot for work so it’s a way for me to still feel productive! But I totally get not wanting to be distracted while driving, and also the struggle with focusing on a story. It definitely takes a conscious effort to not let your mind wander elsewhere when you’re listening to an audiobook. (For me, that goes for reading physical books too – sometimes I find myself zoning out and reading pages without actually comprehending any of it!)

    1. It definitely takes a conscious effort. I didn’t realize that when I first started out. I’m so happy you are able to drive and listen to audiobooks. Major props to you lol!!! I definitely don’t see myself being able to anytime soon, if ever lol!

  2. Ooh, I’m SO intrigued by that podcast. I have such difficulty focusing on audiobooks but not podcasts so I’m wondering if that might be easier for me to get into audiobooks??? I’m going to give it a go and bookmark that. Thank you for sharing!

  3. I also download to my phone. I am lucky and can get a ton of great audiobooks via my library (Libby and Hoopla). One narrator, who stands out in my mind is Sebastian York. I am not sure if Emma Chase always uses him or not, but he was phenomenal on Tangled.
